Although the beginnings of Fairhaven Morris started over beers and planning in pubs as far back as 2009, Fairhaven Morris officially started in 2011. That was when a rag-tag group of seasoned Morris dancers (and a few new recruits who had no idea what they were getting themselves into) strapped on their bell pads, picked up some sticks, and headed to the nearest Medieval festival.
Since then, Fairhaven has spent more than a decade growing in numbers and building a community of Morris Dancers in Arizona and neighboring states. Our love of folk dance and music is only overshadowed by our genuine affection for each other. Seriousy, we could not spend all this time together if we didn't actually like each other as people.
Fairhaven Morris a mixed side that dances in many traditions, including (but not limited to) Fieldtown, Border, and Bampton. We're always looking for people who are passionate about performing as an ensemble, as either a musician, dancer, or both! If this sounds like something you're interested in, please feel free to contact us anytime!
Morris dancing is a traditional English folk dance where a group of dancers, usually dressed in matching kit, perform intricate steps and formations to live music. Typically accompanied by a band or musician, the dancers might use props such as swords, handkerchiefs, or sticks. In most cases, the dancers wear bells on their legs which create a percussive element that punctuates the distinctive movements of the choregraphed stepping.
This vibrant tradition thrives through street performances and regional gatherings, where Morris dance teams come together to celebrate and share their art. The use of the internet and social media has only expanded the camaraderie and collaboration amongst teams from all over the world, keeping this living tradition alive.
